A Modest Proposal for the Amerikan Left

Dear Amerikan Left,

The Pershing Missile you so authoritatively hysterically insisted mistakenly opposed would start another arms race helped end the Cold War with The Mighty Soviet Union and in spite of the inept thanks to the towering leadership of Reagan and Bush the world somehow managed to survive the oligarchic warmongers gave birth to The Russian Commonwealth. You succeeded in ending enlarging the genocide in South East Asia by levitating the Pentagon until we stopped oppressing the free and democratic people of Vietnam and Cambodia abandoning an oppressed people and leaving them in the clutches of villains such as Pol Pot who tortured and murdered millions of his own people. You looked the other way screamed bloody murder when the former President kept refused to acknowledge the negotiating authority of Yassar Arafat for years cooling his heels while he was making a DNA donation and forced the Palestinian Authority to take the negotiating process seriously. You predicted that Afghanistan would fail to have legitimate elections scoffed at the long-term prospects of Afghanistan's legitimate elections keep trying to find ways to undermine the success of the War on Terrorism. You encourage Universities to disinvest in businesses associated with the State of Israel. You demand diversity Blacklist non-Amerikan Left professors who attempt to provide intellectual balance on University campuses. You welcome with open arms oppress students with views in opposition to your own.

You get it wrong a lot of the time. Just like the rest of us. Only you never say you're sorry.

Please, Amerikan Left, in the spirit of fair play and decency, take another look at yourself in the mirror and admit to a few errors just piss off. It'll do so much to make things right again.

Thanks.

Most of us.

ok, I'll bite:

"The Pershing Missile you so authoritatively hysterically insisted mistakenly opposed would start another arms race helped end the Cold War"

Their diasaterous war in Afganistan had probably more to do with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Under Carter, and then vigorously under Reagan, the United States armed and trained Afgani warlords and put rocket launchers on the shoulders of Islamic fundamentalists. Luckily, those Muslim radicals got all the fight out of their system when they drove out the Russsians. So they put down those millions off dollars worth of weapons and went back to their lives. There were no long-term repercussions, and not another thought was given to that marvellous, peaceful land of Afganistan. Night night.

"with The Mighty Soviet Union and in spite of the inept thanks to the towering leadership of Reagan and Bush the world somehow managed to survive the oligarchic warmongers gave birth to The Russian Commonwealth."

...and the Russian mafia, and free-market access to fissionable material beyond any U of C economics professor's dreams.

" You succeeded in ending enlarging the genocide in South East Asia by levitating the Pentagon until we stopped oppressing the free and democratic people of Vietnam and Cambodia abandoning an oppressed people and leaving them in the clutches of villains such as Pol Pot who tortured and murdered millions of his own people."

The people of Viet Nam were never free: sham elections in the south put the murderous Diem in charge until the US had him popped. The carpet bombing of Cambodia and expansion of the war on Nixon's orders (more bombs dropped than in all of WWII) was instrumental in creating the conditions for the Khmer Rouge-led bloodbath. It was never America's intention to democratize the region, just to stop the spread of Communism. In which case, the US succeeded. The region lost millions of potential Communists and is economically hobbled to this day. Had more American troops been commited to the war in Viet Nam, China would have very likely sent troops of their own as they did in Korea.

"You looked the other way screamed bloody murder when the former President kept refused to acknowledge the negotiating authority of Yassar Arafat for years cooling his heels while he was making a DNA donation"

OK, Yassar Arafat was a crook and wasn't much of a friend to the Palestinians; he was astonishingly wealthy while the people he allegedly represented are astonishingly poor. And, oh yeah, I remember something about Clinton getting it wet at one point. Don't ever ever ever pass up the chance to bring up Clinton's extramarital affairs, regardless of the context. It's the pinnacle of high-minded political debate that never fails to dazzle and stun. BTW: there's also some dishy gossip out there about Gingrich, Kennedy, Eisenhower, and, would you believe -gasp- FDR? tee hee hee!

The US negotiates with tyrants all the time. We don't hold China or Saudi Arabia to any sort of moral barometer before we do business with them. If Palestine were rich with oil we'd probably be less dismissive and much more cheerful around their leaders.

"forced the Palestinian Authority to take the negotiating process seriously"

Bush's cold shoulder to the Palestinians gave Isreal carte-blanche to barricade, blockade, bulldoze and rocket Palestinian villages. Hardly a solution to the region's problems. However, I will give the Bush administration credit now for actually engaging both sides of the conflict.

"You predicted that Afghanistan would fail to have legitimate elections scoffed at the long-term prospects of Afghanistan's legitimate elections keep trying to find ways to undermine the success of the War on Terrorism."

Th US didn't finish the job in Afganistan; bin Laden is still out there. Afganistan is on the brink of civil war, and the continuing half-hearted enngagement there isn't helping as much as it could. Heroin production is up, though!

Prior to 9/11, we were giving money to the Taliban to burn poppy crops. We didn't seem worried about elections in Afganistan then.

"You encourage Universities to disinvest in businesses associated with the State of Israel."

This is a strange, new one on me. Isreal never seems to have trouble getting money from the US, though.

"You demand diversity Blacklist non-Amerikan Left professors who attempt to provide intellectual balance on University campuses. You welcome with open arms oppress students with views in opposition to your own."

Ah yes, those nasty leftist campus intellectuals; that old saw. If you have stats on the number of radical left professors vs. moderate or radical right, please share. All anyone who make this claim seem to have on this is anecdotal evidence. So, I'll add my own. My time in college seemed to be equally divided between being harassed by Greenpeace, PIRG and other ideological stripmines of the Left (P.J O'Rourke's expression, not mine) and similar full-court presses from Campus Ministries, College Republicans and other recruiting arms of the Ruling class. Like most of America, most of my professors had trouble giving a fuck, let alone expressing anything vaguely resembling a viewpoint. They wanted tenure, not revolution.

Thank you for your time and attention. I await your response.
